On October 1, 2018, a new law took effect in New Jersey that essentially makes it easier for individuals with certain criminal records to have them expunged. It’s now also faster for adults and juveniles to receive expungements because the waiting time has been reduced. In addition, the number of crimes that may be removed has increased!

Now in New Jersey, the expungement waiting period has been reduced from 10 years down to, in some cases, six years. Changes to the expungement laws also allow you the opportunity to permanently erase sets of crimes that occurred close to the same time or through the same set of circumstances — known as a “crime spree.” Individuals may apply to expunge multiple convictions if they are all part of a “crime spree,” provided the applicants have not been charged with any additional offenses within the expungement time period. It is important to know about these changes because getting a criminal record expunged can give an individual a “second chance” opportunity to rebuild his or her life.

If you have a criminal record in New Jersey and are trying to get a job or applying for housing, an expungement can greatly assist you. It is important that you know and understand the new changes to the expungement laws. Please make an appointment with me, Martin D. Matlaga, as soon as possible so we can discuss your situation and determine if I can help you clean up your record for good.
